What is the difference between a distribution cabinet and a distribution box?

A distribution box, also known as an electrical panel, is primarily used to control and distribute power to electrical equipment, providing protection against overloads, short circuits, and leakage in circuits. Distribution boxes are installed in various locations such as government buildings, hospitals, factories, workshops, and homes. Examples include lighting distribution boxes and Power distribution boxes.

A distribution cabinet is a type of distribution equipment that typically has a larger volume, allowing it to house larger electrical devices. It is generally used for medium-capacity power distribution, accommodating components such as distribution boxes and motors. Its applicable capacity varies across different industrial fields, typically ranging from a few kilowatts to several tens of kilowatts.

Besides differences in function, installation environment, internal structure, and controlled objects, the most notable distinction between distribution boxes and distribution cabinets is their size. Distribution boxes are smaller and can be recessed into walls or mounted on the ground, while distribution cabinets are larger and are typically installed in substations or electrical rooms.

In terms of functionality, distribution cabinets can house various explosion-proof electrical devices or combinations thereof, such as explosion-proof power distribution boxes, explosion-proof electromagnetic starters, and explosion-proof power maintenance boxes. Distribution boxes, on the other hand, typically contain components like circuit breakers, contactors, thermal relays, and indicator lights.

From the perspective of application, distribution boxes are commonly used in residential settings, while distribution cabinets are more frequently employed in centralized power supply systems, such as industrial and building power distribution. Both distribution boxes and distribution cabinets are considered complete sets of electrical equipment. Distribution boxes fall under low-voltage equipment, whereas distribution cabinets can be either high-voltage or low-voltage.

Their appearance and dimensions also differ. Distribution boxes are typically wall-mounted enclosures, while distribution cabinets are free-standing cabinets, often as large as a refrigerator, and are generally placed on the floor for use.
