Characteristics of Transformer Corrugated Radiators

2026-02-17

Corrugated radiators are an indispensable and crucial component of oil-Immersed Transformers. The number of radiator fins is strictly manufactured according to design drawings. Generally, a finished transformer requires four sets of radiators (two long and two short), and the capacity of the transformer determines the number of radiator fins. In other words, larger capacities correspond to a higher number of radiator fins. The role of transformer corrugated radiators should not be underestimated, as oil-immersed transformers utilize natural oil circulation and natural cooling, also known as oil-immersed self-cooling.

In oil-immersed transformers, the low-voltage windings generally adopt a cylindrical structure wound with copper foil, except for small-capacity units which use copper wire. The high-voltage windings employ a multi-layer cylindrical structure, ensuring balanced ampere-turn distribution, low leakage flux, high mechanical strength, and strong short-circuit resistance. The core and windings are each secured with fastening measures. Key parts such as high- and low-voltage leads are equipped with self-locking anti-loosening nuts. The transformer adopts a coreless-lifting structure, enabling it to withstand shocks during transportation. The coils and core undergo vacuum drying, while the transformer oil is processed through vacuum filtration and oil-filling techniques, minimizing internal moisture.

The tank utilizes corrugated panels, which feature a breathing function to compensate for volume changes in the oil due to temperature variations. As a result, the transformer does not require an oil conservator, significantly reducing the overall height of the oil-immersed transformer. By replacing the oil conservator, the corrugated panels isolate the transformer oil from the external environment, effectively preventing the ingress of oxygen and moisture, which could otherwise degrade insulation performance.

These five features collectively ensure that oil-immersed transformers do not require oil replacement during normal operation, greatly reducing maintenance costs while extending the transformer’s service life.

Corrugated radiators are currently the most widely used type of radiator. They offer advantages such as material savings, lightweight design, the ability to save two-thirds of the transformer oil, a 6.47% reduction in cost, and high cooling efficiency. However, they demand high welding process standards and exhibit relatively poor mechanical strength.
